Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I am a living example that a career is not linear. After 20 years in the UK Armed Forces, I transitioned to a Regional Corporate Security role where he built a converged security team combining physical security, information security, business continuity management and disaster recovery. I subsequently became a Global Chief Security Officer and built my own company before becoming a Global CISO in the Oil and Gas industry.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

Serve to Lead – build a culture of collaboration and empowerment and then get out of the way to enable the talent to deliver, grow and succeed.

What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?

My organization, like so many others, is going through multiple structural and organizational changes. The key is to provide a compelling and achievable vision that informs how each member of the team contributes to success, whilst enabling clear prioritization of tasks and allocation of resources.

What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?

Listen more than you speak.

How do you measure success as a leader?

The number of team members who go on to bigger and better roles in the team and in the wider security industry.

What is the value of being a member of Gartner C-level Communities?

The opportunity to work with inspirational security leaders.
