Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I was managing teams that analyzed healthcare actuarial data at Kaiser Permanente, then credit risk management data at Fair, Isaac and Wells Fargo. After that, concentrating on protecting the data just came naturally.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

My guiding leadership principle is to create the gaps and let your team fill them.

What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?

I address current challenges by showing others the connections I see between all the different protective disciplines. The only way to address it is to keep communicating and adding value to all of them.

What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?

The key to success is to lead with humility. Your program is never as good as it should be and if you think it is, you should be in marketing, not security.

How do you measure success as a leader?

I measure success by my team's performance and satisfaction.

Evanta Governing Body members share their insights and leadership perspectives to shape the agendas and topics that address the top priorities impacting business leaders today.
