Raymond (Ray) Lowe is the SVP and CIO for AltaMed Health Services, which serves over 400,000 Latino, multiethnic, low income and underserved patients in Los Angeles and Orange County. He is a strong advocate for health equity and works to find innovative ways to close gaps in care.
As a skilled transformational IT leader, he focuses on visionary strategic and innovative approaches to solve complex business as well as IT challenges. Ray is nationally recognized in Becker’s Hospital Review as “One of the Top 100 Healthcare CIOS to know” for 2019, 2020 and 2021 and in the Los Angeles Business Journal as a nonprofit CIO finalist for 2021.

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
Serving in leadership roles at Dignity Health, Providence Health and Services and Kaiser Permanente provided me the breadth and depth of experience to be a transformational healthcare leader.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
As leaders, we need to work strategically with our business partners to meet business outcomes. Also, we need to ensure that we find opportunities that allow our staff to be valued and continue to grow personally and professionally.
With disruption being a key theme of the past year, where do you see your role as a CIO going in the next 1-2 years?
As a CIO in the healthcare industry, two areas have specifically come into focus. The first is data analytics and the alignment of payer, provider and hospital information, and the second is patient and consumer engagement strategies.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the CIO role?
Network internally and externally to find mentors and supporters. Understand political decision making. Operational excellence and cyber security are non-negotiables.

- I enjoy road biking, skiing and working out.
- My best time is family time and cooking Sunday night family dinners.
What is the value of participating in a professional community through Evanta?
I joined Evanta over 10 years ago when I was an IT Director. I would learn from thought leaders across all industries while formulating my personal and professional development plan. Plus, the ability to network with the best and brightest definitely contributed to my career success.
