Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

More than two decades ago, I embarked on a 12-week secondment in Digital Technology, transitioning from my role as a holiday shop manager to aid in the development of a new colleague-facing application. I never looked back! In 2013, I moved to E.ON UK, where I began as a Senior Business Analyst. Over time, I transitioned into Business Architecture and then led the Enterprise Architecture team. By 2020, I had the privilege of joining the Digital Technology leadership team. Since 2021, I've held the position of Head of Digital Technology and Expert Services. In addition I sponsor the Digital Technology Early Talent programme.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

Become the person you needed when you were younger.

With disruption being a key theme of recent years, where do you see your particular role going in the next 1-2 years?

Perpetual transformation has become our standard operating procedure. I've come to view new technologies not as disruptors but as an ongoing, ever-evolving cycle of change. It's about embracing adaptability and the agile development practices that enable our company to swiftly respond to emerging trends and technologies. The significance of data will only grow, empowering us to make informed decisions amid this dynamic landscape. Commitment to the upskilling of DT teams is required, ensuring they're well-prepared to navigate and harness these changes effectively.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Continuously learn, it’s crucial to stay up to date with the latest technology trends and industry advancements. While technology often serves as a support function, invest time in comprehending business objectives and strategy. This understanding is key to leveraging technology in ways that align with and drive those goals. Extend your horizons beyond your daily role. Whether it's assisting others, mentoring, or engaging in different initiatives, you'll forge new connections, build a network, and gain deeper insights into your organisation. Seek out mentors who can offer valuable guidance and insights. Then take every opportunity - approach your career as a journey of opportunities, not just a ladder to climb. The next best move might lead upwards, but it could also involve lateral transitions, temporary roles, or venturing into a completely new area. Stay agile and open to diverse career paths.

Tell us three fun facts about yourself.

  1. I invested 7 years in the restoration of a century-old cottage that was on the verge of demolition. Looking back, perhaps demolishing it would have been the wiser choice!
  2. I love travel, and every December, my mother and I embark on a tradition of exploring the Christmas markets in a different European city - we’ve been to 23 so far and I’m always looking for recommendations.
  3. I dabble in playing the piano, though I must admit, my skills leave much to be desired!
