Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
My path to the CISO role was a nontraditional journey. Starting with a BBA in Management of Information Systems from Sam Houston State University, I began my leadership career as the Voice Communications Manager in the Information Technology Department. I then transitioned from managing voice communications to becoming a Senior IT Audit Manager. This role involved assessing IT risks, developing audit plans, and managing audit teams. In May 2021, I advanced to my executive position, overseeing enterprise security strategy for Woodforest National Bank.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
One of my guiding leadership principles is to lead by example. I firmly believe that actions speak louder than words, and by demonstrating the values and work ethic I expect from my team, I can inspire and motivate them to achieve their best.
What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?
One of the greatest challenges facing CISOs today is managing and mitigating the ever-evolving threat landscape. By adopting a comprehensive approach that integrates advanced technologies, robust processes, and a cybersecurity-aware culture, we can effectively manage and mitigate these threats. Additionally, I believe collaboration and continuous learning are key to staying ahead of cybercriminals and ensuring the security and resilience of the organization.
How do you measure success as a leader?
As a leader, I measure my success by the achievements and progress of my team. Their success serves as a direct reflection of my leadership capabilities. By fostering an environment of support, collaboration, and growth, I ensure that each team member can excel. In essence, the metric of my leadership is inherently tied to how well my team performs and thrives.
