Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
My path to becoming Chief Information Security Officer of Natera actually began in my high school time, where I developed a passion for technology and computer security. That early curiosity led to a Ph.D. in secure software engineering from the University of Southern California and senior leadership roles at Visa, Palo Alto Networks, Microsoft, Cisco, and Coupang. These experiences have shaped the technical depth, industry understanding, strategic vision, and leadership approach that I bring to my role today.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
My first leadership principle is to be real and practical — to lead with authenticity, connect with people, stay results-driven, prioritize relentlessly, and keep things simple. I believe trust is built when leaders are transparent, approachable, and grounded in reality, and lasting results come from focusing on what matters most and removing unnecessary complexity. In cybersecurity, that means engaging openly with stakeholders, aligning priorities with business needs, making clear trade-offs, and delivering outcomes that are both effective and efficient.
What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?
The greatest challenge in my role today is consistently delivering business results under uncertainty — where evolving threats, rapid AI-driven change, and shifting business priorities redefine the playing field every day. I address this by setting clear objectives, prioritizing relentlessly, attracting and developing top talent, and fostering a culture that embraces change and drives innovation to stay ahead.
What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?
The key to success is to listen, learn, and align quickly. Build trust by understanding the business, connecting with stakeholders, and delivering early wins that show measurable value. Stay focused on priorities, communicate with clarity, and create the conditions for your team to excel — because your success is ultimately their success.
How do you measure success as a leader?
I measure success by delivering results, earning trust, and building a team that can excel without me.
