Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
My journey to becoming CIO at Hikma Pharmaceuticals involved a series of strategic roles in IT leadership across various technology functions. Starting as a programmer at American Express, I honed my skills in financial services before transitioning to life sciences with roles of increasing responsibility at Pfizer, Zoetis Animal Health and Syneos Health. Each role has provided unique challenges and learning opportunities, ultimately preparing me for my current position as the Chief Information Officer of Hikma Pharmaceuticals.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
My guiding leadership principles revolve around the three T's: Trust, Transparency, and Teamwork. Trust is the foundation of any successful team, fostering a sense of security and reliability among team members. Transparency ensures that everyone is on the same page, with open communication and clear expectations. Teamwork brings together diverse skills and perspectives, enabling us to achieve our goals collaboratively and efficiently. Together, these principles create a strong and cohesive environment where everyone can thrive and contribute to our collective success.
What is the greatest challenge technology leaders face today, and how are you addressing it?
As a Chief Information Officer (CIO), one of the greatest challenges faced today is balancing cost pressures with the desire for new and advanced technologies. The role demands a strategic approach to managing budgets while ensuring that the organization remains competitive and innovative. This involves making tough decisions on prioritizing investments, optimizing existing resources, and continuously evaluating emerging technologies to determine their potential impact and value. Navigating these complexities requires a deep understanding of both the business and technological landscapes, as well as strong leadership skills to guide the team through these challenges and drive sustainable growth.
What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CIO?
For a new Chief Information Officer (CIO), the keys to success lie in understanding the business strategy, IT landscape, capabilities, and company culture, and balancing these elements to create a business-aligned IT strategy. Building strong relationships with key stakeholders is also critically important.
How do you measure success as a leader?
Ultimately, a successful CIO is one who can align IT strategies with business objectives, deliver measurable results, and inspire their team to excel.
